Our Pipe Organ: A Gift of Music and Ministry
The story of our pipe organ begins in 1978, when a committee was formed to explore the purchase of a new instrument for our sanctuary. A “First 25 Fund” was established with the goal of securing an organ in time for St. Philip’s 25th anniversary in May of 1983.
The Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio was selected, and the order was placed in June of 1981. The organ was custom-built specifically for our space—a unique instrument designed to support and enhance worship at St. Philip’s.
Delivery and installation were completed in October of 1982, and the organ was dedicated with a special concert on December 5, featuring guest organist Howard Don Small.
At the time, the organ cost $179,886—a significant investment that would be equivalent to over $600,000 today. It includes 42 ranks, 46 stops, and 2,337 pipes, each contributing to the rich and powerful sound that has filled our sanctuary for over four decades.
After 40 years of faithful service, our congregation once again came together through the Building for the Future capital campaign to refurbish this beloved instrument.
During the refurbishment:
- All pipes were carefully removed and cleaned
- Worn materials, such as leather components, were replaced
- The console was upgraded with modern digital technology
While these updates may happen behind the scenes, their impact is deeply felt. The tone of the organ has been greatly improved, and the new digital console allows each of our organists to save their own settings. With the touch of a button, they can move seamlessly between sounds and registrations, enhancing both the beauty and flexibility of the music in worship.
Like many things in life, the organ requires care over time. This restoration ensures that it will continue to lead and inspire for generations to come.
We give thanks for all who helped make both the original purchase and the recent refurbishment possible. This organ remains a powerful and beautiful gift—one that continues to serve the ministry of St. Philip’s through music, worship, and praise.
